today I'm going to present to you punk rock.
It stands in opposition to progressive Rock or Metal who I already spoke about.
In fact they want to detach them from the new direction with the hard rock etc.
The punk rock Bands want to return to the simplicity of rock.
They talk about a punk revolution.
Globally it is short and quite fast songs. Generally the voice is noisy and they are sometimes shouting.
Rooted in garage rock it emerges with the band Ramones (70s) from whom band I doesn't know much.
Then there were the well-known Sex Pistols and the Clash who made Punk rock really popular.
Later Green day, the Offspring and Blink 182 evolved the Punk music by making pop punk songs. The reunion of pop and punk is really interesting.
The Philosophy of this music is to reject virtuosity so that even people with not much musical skills could express themselves with music. Generally the voice is noisy and they are sometimes shouting.
Today I am not giving you some songs you should hear because I'm really not very fond with punk rock. On the other hand I find pop punk quite good. I prefer virtuosity and very long songs like in progressive Rock; so you should check out that post.
Let me know, how do you feel about this kind of Rock and give me good arguments for why it's good or not.

ReplyDeleteI really appreciated your post because, even if you're not a fan of punk rock as I am, I can see that you put forward every kind of rock music and respect it.
Unfortunately I can't really advise you what songs you should listen, except that awesome group : Rise Against. They're really amazing and I only can force you to discover them through my favourite songs from them : "Savior", "Prayer of the Refugee", and that gorgeous ballad "Hero of War".
However Nicolas from the class loves Green Day and I'm sure he could help you to have a better idea, a better vision of punk rock.
Moreover I prefer as well virtuosity as you do, and I find it pretty AWESOME, yeah !!

ReplyDeleteBut I would define these band as light (green day, Rise Against ) they sounds quite good but I think some songs really spoiled the genre for me like this one who is only there to be provocative.

Don't get me wrong I like the new punk rock bands, it is just the extreme with anarchopunk which I find annoying.

ReplyDeleteI don't know much about punk rock, but for a long moment it was the vision that I had from rock : feeling free and not care about the rest. By the way I don't really think that you need to be a good musician to make great songs.Sometimes the energy and the rythm that you bring can build a great song. Also I agree with you that punk/pop is a great style, I really enjoy Sum 41's music for example.
